I remember
Being a kid and playing with this bush.
The tiny red berries
Were all perfectly alike.
I liked the perfect pop
Between my fingertips
When I squeezed them one by one.
I wondered how they got to be bright red.
They just grew that way;
It didn’t matter what the plants around them did.
They seemed so perfectly manufactured
Yet they were so natural;
They trusted themselves.
Red Winterberry Bush
This post made me want to eat some berries. I enjoy how you have some memories of this bush to when you were little. Quick question, is this back in Texas? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a berry bush here in Philly.

My memories of this bush were in Texas yes! Also, the picture is from the house we currently live in SW Missouri (moved here in 2015). So they’re at least common more in the south.

You really reminded me of and captured that memory that a lot of people have of being a kid, outside, seeing some random colorful berry-like thing on a plant, investigating, and inevitably ending with stained fingers or clothes.

Pretty! I enjoyed the line of the “perfect pop”. The 2 worded alliteration rolled well and the popping of the berries I am sure is something we all did as a child. Adding onto that, I appreciate the youthfulness of the poem. I feel like, as adults, we don’t stop to wonder how berries get so red, or what it would be like to squeeze one anymore. You captured a sense of youth so well, I’m glad you were able to reach that feeling. Not many people are able to tap into their youth too much. A very pleasant read, I’m glad you chose the poetic approach.
