Violence changes people. Constant violence against you and people you know wears on you. Even if there is no immediate impact or you try and shrug off the feelings invoked it won’t be without consequence.
Some people have nightmares for the rest of there lives, some do thing’s to feel protected themselves. Possibly going as far as moving houses or purchasing self-defense. Some still change their lifestyles to not do the action they perceived put them in that position. The issue with some of these ways to deal with it, it’s not possible for some.
The more extreme ones like moving aren’t possible for most. Typically only those who are wealthy are able to move. Felons cannot purchase firearms, even most nonviolent felons, although some exceptions exist.
That along with the constant breaking down of people creates a feedback effect where the worse off’s problems get ignored. That only makes it work in the end. Sometimes the violence is enough to prevent people from working through physical disablement or sometimes mental issues that prevent some from working.
Once the cycle is set in place it can be near impossible to break. Taking an unknown amount of time and money. Sometimes it’s not even possible to break the cycle and the most you can do is ease it.
The issue can be in the very beginning, even something as simple as trying to identify there is a problem in the first place could be the biggest hurdle. It doesn’t get easier once the problem is found. It could take just a therapist once a week, or as severe as a full on facility designed to help and up to years were the person is not “a benefit to society”.
In the end these issues won’t, can’t be solved in the near future. Things like these are long term problems with long term solutions.
