There once was a boy who grew up in the U.S. He was raised to believe that people are people no matter the size, age, color, or health. He learned the difference between a choice, and unfortunate circumstances.

His grandma told him before she passed, to choose the friends that bring the most color into his life. Friends that have colorful souls. She said, “search for greens, reds, blues, and yellows!”. He was told by his grandma to look past appearance, skin color, accents, and clothes. “What matters is what’s on the inside not, the outside,” she repeated over and over again to the boy as he grew up.

One day the boy moved to a different school. There he met Yellow an African American boy, who was resourceful, intuitive, and trustworthy. He would always stand by his friends to defend them.

Later, that same year he met Blue and Red, two boys with heavy accents. These two were brothers from Italy. They spoke Italian to each other whenever they would argue. The boy and Yellow would always wonder how bad the arguments were. Blue was mellow, reserved, and typically wanted to relax and kickback. He the younger sibling and was often roped into things when Red wanted to do something. Red being rowdy, rambunctious, arrogant, and full of energy would always want to do something. They both were loving friends who would typically set the tone of the group hangouts.

Green was the last of the friends that the boy would add to his group. She was from Spain and loved to talk. She often found ways to resolve conflict with her chatter but was dead silent when situations involving herself came up. She was emotional and mainly acted on impulse.

The boy’s group was complete and he was proud. He had decided that he had all of the colors he could ever need. He was proud to know that his grandma wouldn’t just approve of his group but praise him. The boy has chosen the right friends for the right reasons. The boy felt as if his soul was an abstract painting and the friends he had made was the palette.

The boy and his group grew together and eventually found themselves in their senior year of high school. With everyone being older their individual personalities have become more solidified. The group was tough but inviting and set an example at the high school. This tough group had never experienced any form of hate but instead had received great feedback from family, classmates, school staff, and locals.

During one of the group’s shopping trips at their local target, Green separated from the group. She was on her way to go pick out an old movie for movie night at Yellows. She approached the section for Disney movies and saw an old man standing there. Green made a conversation about the movie she wanted to buy “Lilo and Stitch”.

They were having a pleasant conversation up until the old man stated that Green had seemed like a nice girl. Green took this as a compliment initially but soon became worried there was a darker tone to the conversation. The old man started to further the conversation.

He asked, “Where are your parents?”, and, “Why would they let you leave the house looking like that?”. Eventually, the old man said in an angry tone, “Well if you’re going to dress like a slut then it puts that great personality of yours to shame!”. Green reacting, slapped the old man across the face and took the movie and ran back to the group.

She told everyone what happened and said she wanted to leave. The boy and his group ,however, wanted to stand up for Green. Red being fueled by anger, walked up to the old man. He started to call him a sexist and ordered him to leave. The old man became furious and didn’t appreciate Red’s accent. Blue not wanting confrontation called Red out and began to argue with him in Italian. Green immediately went to Red and Blue to help them stop arguing. Meanwhile, the boy is exclaiming the whole situation to a worker nearby. Yellow realizing not much is being done to confront the old man, walks up to him. Yellow tells the old man that he is disgusted and thinks its a good idea for him to leave and never speak to women like that again. Yellow is shoved by the old man. While laying on the ground the old man follows up saying, “You’re kind should have never stepped foot into our country, and your two friends bickering over there should really learn some English.” The old man proceeds to spit on Yellow.

The boy seeing all of this happen right in-front of his eyes rushed to stop the old man from leaving as the worker called the police. The boy is successful in stopping the man from leaving and the police arrive. They ask all the questions and see more than enough evidence between the spit on Yellow’s shirt, and the camera recordings. The old man is arrested and the group continues with their movie night.

The following is not apart of the story, but more of an explanation to the main theme and hidden idea. I would ask not to count the following paragraphs and this paragraph towards the word count. Since I’m already like 400 words over, but I wanted to make the story good.

Explanation: The main theme to this post was that you should always stand up for your friends and that what matters about a person isn’t their sex, color, appearance, accents, or any other attribute different to yours.

Now you would think that this is the perfect ending to a terrible situation, which it is. The hidden idea in this story is that every action has a reaction. This scenario ended up being as perfect as it can get. Justice is received to the group and the old man is punished for his actions. Due to bad apples of racism in our society and world this scenario could have taken many turns for the worse. Here are some examples of what could have happened instead of this.

The police officer immediately thinks Yellow was the problem and arrests him because of his skin color.

The police officer is sexist and thinks that Green had it coming to her for wearing “sexual clothes”, or acting inappropriate.

The worker doesn’t want to help the boy out in the situation because he himself is racists and doesn’t appreciate Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow being in the store.

The whole group is arrested or kicked out of the store for causing a commotion because the manager/workers believe that an old man could never do such harm.
