There are over 39,000 people who chose Temple University as the college that suits them best. Our goal for this assignment was to figure out why they felt comfort in choosing Temple as their new home. We interviewed five friends on campus who are first year students that shared their ideas on what makes Temple a safe environment for them.
The first question we asked was “Which factors of your health has changed since you’ve been at college?”. Many of the responses pertained to an increase of stress and lack of appetite. A student said,“I’ve definitely been more stressed since I’ve gotten to school which makes me not eat.” Another interviewee stated that “the college environment has made me feel lonely because I am not with my family and do not have many friends because it’s only the second semester.” We both related to this statement because we also miss our friends and family from back home.
The second question we asked was “Do you feel that Temple’s ‘support system’ is helpful?”. All students but one felt as though Temple does have many resources to aid them if needed. One student replied “Yes, because knowing that we have a wellness center that I can rely on is relieving.” DRS stands for Disability Resources and Services and a student mentioned that her professors made the class aware of these services to use as a resource. This was surprising to us because we weren’t aware of this service. The student who didn’t feel that Temple has reliant services explained that although we have our own campus police, “there are still shootings and robberies that are happening streets away from us”. Overall, we feel as though Temple is both a safe and reliable campus for its students.
