I started off by asking 4 questions of 5 different people.
The first question was if they thought physical or mental health is more important. Three of them stated mental health was more important, one stated they are equally important, and only one said physical was. The overall reason the three thought mental health was more important was that mental health is going to impact physical health as well. As one of the interviewees stated “mental health comes first because your brain is the mastermind behind all your bodies functions. You can have the perfect body, but what is the point if your brain won’t give your body the signals to move or want to even get out of bed.”
The next question was Do you believe colleges/ Education institutions(primary education as well) have an obligation to a students well being? The overall opinion was that resources should be available but it was up to the students to seek help themselves. One of the interviewees stated,” Due to the high-stress environment that colleges are it makes sense that they should take steps to assist students who are dealing with the high stress”.
The third question was if any were taking classes for there health mental or physical. Only two are taking classes related to these with one person taking it due to being required for their major.
The final question was if they felt like Temple cared about them overall. The consensus here was that at the individual level, no but as a whole, they try to even if it’s not always successful. “ I think in order for someone/something to care, they have to know that you’re in need of care” In the words of one interviewee.
Overall I believe that these interviews show that mental health needs a higher focus than is currently provided.
